History

In August 1982, three departments - the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Music (both previously within the College of Liberal Arts), and the Department of Industrial Arts Education (later changed to the Department of Industrial Technology Education) – were combined together to construct the College of Arts. The College went on to witness the departure of the Department of Industrial Technology Education to join the College of Technology in Academic Year 1998, as well as its own gradual expansions with the establishment of the Graduate Institute of Design, the Graduate Institute of Art History, the Department of Visual Design, the Graduate Institute of Ethnomusicology, and the Graduate Institute of Performing Arts. The last two mentioned above later joined the Department of Music in a reorganization effort to form the College of Music in Academic Year 2007.

At present, the College of Arts offers degree programs in four departments/institutes - the Department of Fine Arts (bachelor/master/PhD), the Graduate Institute of Design (master), the Graduate Institute of Art History (master), and the Department of Visual Design (bachelor) - with varied length of study: four years for undergraduate programs, one to four years for master’s degree programs, and two to seven years for the PhD degree program. Students will be conferred a Bachelor, Master, or PhD degree of “fine arts” or “design”, after successful completion of study.

Since Academic Year 2007, the College has concentrated more on fine arts, instead of a broader definition of art, and has been dedicated to the creation and study of visual arts. The courses are structured around building basic competency, core capacity, and creation/research capabilities, and are supported by an outstanding faculty distinguished in both education and experience to meet the needs of the present-day curriculum as well as future development. Among the teaching staff from a comprehensive academic and career background, many have received master’s or PhD degree honors at home and abroad (US, France, UK, Japan, Germany, etc.), and some of them are experts and professionals from overseas. Our faculty members also enjoy good and active interactions with domestic and foreign educational or research institutes, a solid foundation for the College to reach out internationally and to build up a global education and research network. Maintaining a proud tradition of excellence while adjusting themselves to reflect the times, the departments and institutes of the College have for years exchanged visits with peer colleges and academies of fine arts in foreign countries, co-organized multi-national art exhibitions, and collaborated in research projects and seminars. We also encourage existing students to compete internationally, continued to establish exchange programs among sister schools for both teachers and students, and have become a favored destination for European, American, and Asian students in pursuit of advanced study for master’s or doctoral degrees.
